Trans Legal Equality is a new political advocacy group aimed at protecting and improving the legal rights of transgender people in the UK. We are looking for volunteers to make up a core team and further volunteers to support networking and research.
(Link to sign-up at the bottom of this page)
If you are interested in being a member of the core team or wish to volunteer some time, please consider signing the expression of interest at the bottom of this page.
This group will work with politicians and civil servants (like an internal pressure group) but will have a public facing element to communicate our message and gather support.
For the sake of being an expression of interest your first name and email will be collected to provide a means of contact. Your data will only be used to contact and organise respondents.
Objectives:
Equality in law between sex acquired by legal or medical transition for transgender people to that awarded by assignment at birth for cisgender people.
Build new frameworks in law to enable the legal recognition of non-binary people.
Establish this group as a registered charity and provide a counter effort to the rise in anti-trans single issue pressure groups in the UK over the last 10 years.
Principles:
Act for progress. Not publicity.
Act with patience. Not punishment.
Action. Not just awareness.
Willingness to listen and engage across opinions and the political spectrum.
Single issue group. Differences of opinion may be had on other issues, but in this group we are working towards a common goal.
Who do we want?
People with one or more of the following:
Affiliations or connections with mainstream political parties across parliament.
Affiliations or connections with transgender and LGBT+ awareness groups.
Knowledge or experience with law and the legal system.
Knowledge or experience with equality and human rights (law, history, policy)
Knowledge or experience of Government, Parliament, and their role in shaping law and policy.
Knowledge or experience of the UK Court System.
Knowledge or experience with Communications and Social Media.
Knowledge or experience with Charities and/or their accountancy.
Experience with the operation of advocacy/pressure groups.
If none of the above. A desire to work for change following the outlined principles.
Note: This is completely grassroots at present. As such all immediate work will be voluntary.
Immediate Goals:
Virtual-meet of interested persons to confirm willingness to form pressure group.
Agree objectives of the group.
Set-up as a Charity.
Begin work.
This group is not going to have the right answers to all problems the transgender community faces. But we will work to provide the legal protections transgender people deserve so that the more varied issues have a baseline from which to work off.
Personal note: These past few weeks have been shocking both in terms of the ruling itself and the responses to the ruling. Personally I fall under number 10 'none of the above' in experience. But I want to work, learn, and facilitate for change. I am setting this up in my free time. A willingness to participate and work for this group does not mean giving up commitments or all free-time, I would not expect that of anyone. - Erin (she/her).
